A pair of rare blue and white armorial plates decorated to the centre with a monogram possibly for 'SSV' within a wreath with a tied ribbon and a love knot above. the border with a passion fruit plant bearing flowers and fruit. The back with flower sprays and marked with an artemisia leaf within a double circle.
Although very rare, these plates are documented in Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market by Jochem Kroes. He suggests that although it is unknown who commissioned the plates it is likely that is was for a woman given the predominance of female imagery. There is a precedence for the use of love knots and palms in the heraldry of married females in the 17th century. An example is illustrated in his book, cat no 3, p 106.

Dimensions: 27.2 cm diameter.

Condition: One plate with rim fritting, rim chips and a hairline from rim of approx 3.5 cm, the other plate in good condition.

Kangxi period (1662-1722).
