Japanese Armorial Plate

Japanese Armorial Plate

A rare Japanese plate decorated in Imari colours with an unfinished coat of arms to the centre and with alternating panels of flower baskets and landscapes in green enamels to the well.
Japanese armorial porcelain is rare and this example appears to be either unfinished in the expectation that it would be completed in Europe (most likely in the Netherlands) or indeed as an apocryphal proof as an example of what could be ordered from the Arita kilns.

Condition: poor. A large piece glued and further cracks and craquele. Rubbing to enamels and the overglaze red. Typically an academic piece.

Arita, circa 1680-1700.
